What is the point of recycling?
Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK's fastest growing type of waste. In the UK, households throw away over 26.8 million tonnes of waste. That is the same weight as 3.83 million male African Elephants!
Helping to recycle unwanted or broken electronic or electrical goods helps keep the waste from landfill which reduces the environmental impact where hazardous substances can leak out and cause soil and water contamination, harming wildlife, and human health.
Recycling old electrical or electronic items is easy at your local recycling centre. To find a recycling centre near you there is a handy tool at the Recycle More website, simply type in your postcode and what you're looking to recycle and it will show you your closest centres!
To help remind you that old electrical or electronic items can be recycled, they are now marked with a crossed-out bin symbol, see the image below. Please do not dispose of any electrical or electronic equipment in your home bin, please recycle it instead.
What is WEEE (Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment)?
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – in other words, electrical and electronic goods that are being thrown away. The ultimate aim of WEEE recycling regulation is to tackle the world’s fastest-growing waste stream, electricals, to curb environmental damage and to stop the economic value of a range of precious materials being lost forever.
